The Bell Museum of Natural History had its roots in the formation of the Minnesota Geological and Natural History Survey organized in 1872. A museum was mentioned in the original plans but no formal action was taken until 1875 when Newton Horace Winchell, Survey Director, brought up the subject in his annual report. The University Gallery, originally known as the Little Gallery, was established at the University of Minnesota on April 5, 1934. The gallery's function was to increase art appreciation by students, faculty, staff, and the general public. In January 1990, Los Angeles businessman and art collector, Frederick R.
